Prelude and Fugue No. 2 in c (Book 2)

The Prelude is a classic two-part invention with the trademark imitation of motives between the parts. Listen for the way Bach structures the range of the parts - sometimes they remain in close relation and other times branch out into their own independent thought. The Fugue represents well the implied turbulence of the key of c minor with a terse theme centered on broken triad. The concluding strettos heighten the mood by their layering of entrances, less due to virtuosic display. A cadenza ends the piece, something Bach seems to use sparingly in their collection.
