A large number of oligosaccharides have been prepared by partially breaking down more complex carbohydrates (polysaccharides). Most of the few naturally occurring oligosaccharides are found in plants. Disaccharides Disaccharides consist of two monosaccharide units, linked by glycosidic bond in the α or β orientation. The most important disaccharides are sucrose, lactose, and maltose. Sucrose consists of a molecule of α-glucose and a molecule of β-fructose linked together. Lactose is found in milk and dairy products and consists of a molecule of galactose linked to a glucose molecule by a β-1,4glycosidic bond.
