The deck was soaked. Visibility was collapsing. And a civilian freighter was running out of time. Launching side-by-side from USS John C. Stennis in heavy rain, we pushed into deteriorating weather to investigate a distress call from a civilian vessel being shadowed by hostile boats. With cloud ceilings forcing us low and radar contacts stretching back over 80 miles, we descended to the deck to gain visual confirmation. I carried AGM-65F IR Mavericks. Punch brought GBU-12s — a mixed loadout chosen to fight through poor visibility and uncertain targeting conditions. But over the water, small boats offered little heat signature. My weapons stayed cold. Punch pressed the attack. Under fire from the surface, through multiple attack passes and worsening weather, the Hornets held the line. After the last target was destroyed, we fought clouds to tank from a KC-135 MPRS — a last insurance policy before returning to the ship. Recovery was no easier. Low visibility, Case II conditions, a hard landing that fouled the deck… followed by a bolter and a second pass.
