February 1991 marked an early milestone in my international journey. On my very first trip to Germany, I appeared on “Gottschalk,” the nationally televised talk and entertainment show hosted by Thomas Gottschalk, one of the biggest stars in German television history. The broadcast was conducted entirely in German, and for the first time in my career, I performed while wearing an earbud that delivered a live English translation. The translation arrived with a slight delay, which meant I had to listen, process, and respond a beat behind — a new and slightly surreal challenge that added an extra layer of focus to the performance. Despite the language barrier, the energy of the live audience and Thomas Gottschalk’s relaxed, effortless hosting made the experience both successful and memorable. The appearance introduced Finger Fitness to a major European audience and became one of my earliest international television performances. Outside the studio, I had the chance to experience German culture firsthand and was struck by the craftsmanship and the enduring way things were built. My grandmother was fully German and an accomplished pianist, and I’m one-quarter German myself. Somewhere along the way, I remember thinking — maybe my hands are German too.
