This video features my 1991 performance at The Magic Castle in Hollywood, hosted by the wonderful Bruce Gold — still performing today and well known in the magic community. While filming The Best of Magic in England the year before in 1990, my agent Chuck Harris (Visual Arts Group) introduced me backstage to Peter Pitt, a legendary magician who was booking acts for the Castle. At the time, I knew almost nothing about magic. I didn’t even know a single trick, and when they mentioned performing at “the Castle,” I briefly thought I might be headed to Germany! I soon learned that The Magic Castle is truly the Carnegie Hall of magic, the most exclusive club for magicians in the world. Being invited to perform there was an honor and an incredible opportunity. Looking back, it felt a little crazy that I was performing at the best magic club on the planet while not really knowing any magic at all. I didn’t use illusions or tricks. All I had were my two hands, a pair of gloves, and metal balls. Still, I met world class magicians who offered guidance on stage presence, taking a bow, audience engagement, and the subtle nuances of showmanship that stayed with me for years. Between shows, I remember sharing a beer with Bill Larsen, one of the brothers who owned the Magic Castle. He told me he had seen just about every magician since Houdini and that most were some variation on previous acts, but what I did was completely original. That meant a lot to me and confirmed that I had something unique to offer the magic world. His brother Milt Larsen also became a friend and supporter of my work. We even traveled to China together. At the end of the video you will hear Milt Larsen speak about my achievements, a moment I will never forget. The audio and video quality of the VHS tape had some problems. The original audio had a bad buzz. There was some editing done to minimize the buzz but it also muffled a lot of the audience response which you might sense if you listen closely - Sorry about that.
