Trees Atlanta will summarize the key changes in the recently circulated draft of the City of Atlanta’s Tree Protection Ordinance (TPO). This virtual lunch & learn will include Trees Atlanta's feedback on the top changes as well as sections that we believe need further changes. The proposed draft of Atlanta's TPO is being circulated by the Department of City Planning for comment ahead of a vote by City Council likely in early Spring. The public has a brief window (February and March) to submit comments. The draft of the TPO has been sent to NPUs to be reviewed by residents and neighborhood groups for comment. A "companion" zoning administrative variance change is also included for NPU review and vote in February and March. What do you need to know? Judy Yi, Director of Marketing & Outreach, and Greg Levine, Executive Director, at Trees Atlanta and stakeholders in the TPO revision process, will share insights into the changes that were made, which were positive, which still present concerns, discuss next steps, and how you can get involved! For many years, the City of Atlanta, along with dozens of people representing the city, developers, housing, equity, and tree advocacy, have been working to update its Tree Protection Ordinance (TPO) – the first major revision since it was originally adopted in 2001. The TPO regulates the preservation and planting requirements for trees located in all public and private properties in the city. It guides the permitting process for tree removal, fees, fines, and use of the Tree Trust Fund to ensure the city’s tree canopy continues to thrive.
