MONROE - News 12 toured the property Friday that is at the center of a bitter turf war between the Village of Kiryas Joel and the neighboring town of Town of Monroe. Monroe Supervisor Harvey Doles says there are upwards of 100 housing units under development near the site in Kiryas Joel, and the land owners have requested a total of 507 acres of land from Monroe to potentially build more units. Critics of the land annexation worry that more high-density housing units will be built if the owners get the land, putting a strain on the area's natural resources. The village would have to supply its own water and sewer systems. However, the village has already begun a $45 million water pipeline project, which would quadruple its water usage by 2045, according to a document obtained by News 12. The village and the town are both vying for control over which will be in charge of performing the site's environmental quality review, or SEQR. Kiryas Joel and Monroe had until March 27 to submit final documents to the Department of Environmental Conservation, which has until the end of April to make a decision.
