The Cambodian authorities falsely reported my passport as lost, which led to major financial and emotional consequences for me. That's why I heavily criticize Cambodia today, because of what immigration did to me. Why This Is a Serious Issue and something to heavily criticize Cambodia for. Falsely reporting your passport as lost can: Invalidate your travel documents, stranding you or making it impossible to leave the country legally. Trigger suspicion or investigations in your home country. Disrupt visas and residency permits. Be used as a cover for abuse of power, corruption, or extortion. Possible Reasons This Might Happen Administrative error (unlikely if it had major consequences). Corruption or bribery schemes. Retaliation, targeting, or coercion. Collusion with third parties (e.g., property disputes, visa agents, etc.). What You Can Do Depending on your situation, here are some next steps: 1. File a Report with Your Embassy Immediately inform your home country’s embassy or consulate. Provide documentation and a written account of what happened. Request a new passport and seek diplomatic assistance. 2. Document Everything Dates, names, locations, copies of official documents, statements by officials, etc. If you were detained or denied services, note who was responsible. 3. Seek Legal Support Find an independent lawyer familiar with expat and immigration law in Cambodia. Some NGOs and legal aid groups also help in cases of government misconduct. 4. Go Public (If Safe) Writing publicly or to human rights organizations about your experience may help: Amnesty International Human Rights Watch Reporters Without Borders Local press or international journalists who cover SE Asia 5. Report to the UN or NGOs UN Special Rapporteur on Human Rights in Cambodia (or similar bodies). International watchdog organizations may take an interest, especially if this reflects a pattern. Be sure to take care of your passport and always verify with your embassy that it is valid before traveling. That way you won't end up in the mess I did!
