At 1,748m, Ben Lomond is a 1,438 m elevation gain from Queenstown. The track begins among Douglas fir on Tiki Trail. At about 800 m altitude you leave the tree line behind to enter alpine tussocks and shrubs. Climb to the 1,326 m Ben Lomond Saddle. Beyond the saddle is Ben Lomond Station where the track crosses private land and is unmaintained. From here, the terrain becomes steeper and rougher. The hardest part of the climb remains as you approach Ben Lomond's summit. On a clear day the summit offers panoramic views over Queenstown, Lake Wakatipu and the surrounding mountain ranges. Ben Lomond Station is a 3,000 acre high country station nestled right behind Queenstown and is one of the few remaining high country stations owned and operated by New Zealanders. Moke Lake and Moke Creek were named after an old mule on the farm. Ngāi Tahu call the lakes Punamāhaka and Waikāmāhaka, both meaning “twin waters”, describing the peculiar shape of the lake.
