In this episode, our new Science MINDS host Olivia Surgent talks with Benjamin Handen, professor of psychiatry, pediatrics, psychology and instruction and learning at the University of Pittsburgh. They discuss Handen’s more than 40 years in the field and his work at a summer camp for children with intellectual disability and his time as a special education teacher. Handen shares that both jobs influenced his desire to work with children with developmental and intellectual disability. Handen also shares that his psychopharmacology research played a role in the use of stimulant drugs in children with intellectual disability who have ADHD (attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder). Surgent and Handen also talk about Handen’s current project, the Autism Biomarker Consortium – Down syndrome, a long-term, comprehensive study that includes more than 600 participants and 94 co-investigators around the country. The study is informing clinical trials for potential Alzheimer’s treatments. Handen was a speaker in the MIND Institute’s Distinguished Lecturer Series in January 2025.
