Pilgrims, not only from Austria, do not hesitate to walk hundreds of kilometers here. Countless people have visited here over the centuries. And there were also anointed heads. Mariazell, the largest pilgrimage site in Austria and one of the most important Marian shrines in Central Europe, to which the composer Joseph Haydn dedicated two masses, has attracted believers since the 12th century and is an integral part of the history of the Christian West. Although no miracle has actually happened here, at least not yet, thousands of processions take place here every year. In addition to spiritual encouragement, the town and its surroundings also offer worldly pleasures, from caresses for the digestive tract to spicy gingerbread to great skiing or summer hiking. The sacred statue of the Gracious Mother of God is still revered as Magna Mater Austriae, the Great Mother of Austria, and is dressed in expensive dresses, most of which come from members of noble families. Without clothing, the 48 cm tall statue, surrounded by two archangels, can only be seen twice a year, on the feast of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary on September 8 and on the day of the church's foundation on December 21. Neuberg, Austria is located in the municipality of Neuberg an der Mürz in the federal state of Styria (Steiermark). It is a small town known primarily for its well-preserved Gothic Cistercian monastery of the same name. Neuberg Monastery was founded in 1327 by Duke Ottokar of Habsburg and is an important historical and architectural monument. It is located in the picturesque valley of the Mürz River, surrounded by the beautiful nature of the Austrian Alps.
