Saving the Enlightenment from Itself While much of MacIntyre's story in After Virtue agrees with Hegel's diagnosis of modernity in the Phenomenology and elsewhere, in the end Hegel stands as an advocate of the modern Enlightenment project of freedom and autonomy. I lay out Hegel's case for modern utility, duty, and conscience, and interrogate the viability of Hegel's ethics in light of MacIntyre's critique. I argue that Hegel's case for a modern system of right is strong, largely owing to a new conception of social rationality that I call teleological inferentialism. There is indeed much to lament in the modern social order, and it is far more fragile than Hegel thought, but he was fundamentaliy correct to argue for a unity of right rather than a unity of virtue.
