The Colca Canyon is one of the world’s deepest canyons, situated approximately 99 miles northwest of the city of Arequipa in southern Peru. Placed in the colorful Colca Valley of the Andes Mountains, this canyon has a length of about 69 km (43 mi) and a depth of about 3350 m (11,000 ft). There are 3 popular ways to experience the Colca Canyon, each one best suited based on available time and fitness level. The first option is a 1-day tour from Arequipa, which is mostly sightseeing with a van stopping at various attractions. Then there is a 2-day or 3- day trek through the canyon. Both treks take similar hiking routes but spread out over 2 days vs 3. The 2-day trek requires a good bit of fitness as you'll be covering 15 km on day 1 and is best suited for those short on time. We've heard stories of hikers arriving after dark on day 1, which makes for a very long day after a 3 am start. We chose the 3-day trek, which is still challenging, but is spread out over 7 km on the first day and 8 km on the second. Day 1 started out quite early with a 3 am pickup from our hotel in Arequipa. We stopped for a quick breakfast in the city of Chivay around 6:30 am. We reached a Colca Canyon viewing point around 9 am in order to catch a glimpse of the Andean Condor, which has a wingspan between 2 and 3 meters (7 - 9 ft). From there, we met with our Peruvian guide, Patricia (70 yrs old and in much better trekking shape than us 😂) and two other young hikers Jenny and Giulia. We began our descent around 10 am. The hike started off pretty easy and flat, but by the 3rd km it was much steeper. It took us about 3.5 hours to reach the canyon floor and first bridge crossing. Then we had a steep hike up hill to reach the Posada Gloria Lodge, which was our home for the first night. After a delicious dinner, we slept well in simple accommodations. Day 2 started out with breakfast at 8 am, after which we enjoyed a leisurely start to our hiking day at 8:30 am. Shortly after starting out nice and easy, we saw where the 2-day trek path veered left, with the trail staying below the village. We veered right and followed a path near a nice stream with small waterfalls. After about 2 hours, we reached the Ouilla Lodge restaurant where we enjoyed freshly made Jugos (juices). We enjoyed an extended rest here, as our guide forgot something at the first lodge. Once he returned, we had a short hike to reach the Cosñinhua village where we were greeted by local villagers enjoying local festivities celebrating the start of their growing season with cleaning of their canals and invited us to join in their drink of local pisco and dancing. So much fun. After a couple more hours of hiking, we reached what is referred to as the Oasis, or the bottom of the Canyon where we spent the night. We were thrilled to relax in the pool and enjoyed a warm shower. Night temps were around 5° C / 41°F. Day 3 started out at 4:30 am with headlamps, to give us enough time to reach the top in time for breakfast and our van at 9 am. No worries, we made it to the top by 8 am, but we were quite exhausted after a 1000-meter (3280 ft) elevation gain. We gathered for some pictures at the top but learned that we had another 1 km trek on mostly flat ground, where we enjoyed a nice breakfast. Around 9 am, we joined a 1-day tour van for our return trip to Arequipa. We stopped at some quaint villages, spent an hour in some hot springs and got close to Lamas. We made it back to Arequipa around 5:30 pm. Our 🧭 compass now points North as we continue our Peru adventure to Cusco, Urubamba, Ollantaytambo and finally Aguas Calientes (Machu Picchu) #Peru #Arequipa #ColcaCanyon #Andes #AlwaysAnAdventure #LoveLovingYou #ZachMan #MissingYouSoMuch #ThisIsLife #BeKind #Repurposed #ExperiencesNotStuff #NoMistakesOnlyLessons #coddiwomple #hodophile #TravelerLife #nomads #RovingRetirement #SlowTravel #SlowLiving #ForeverOnVacation Chapters 0:00 Introduction 0:26 Andean Condor 0:51 Day 1 Hiking 3:41 Day 2 Hiking 9:14 Day 3 Hiking 11:50 Day Tour Return to Arequipa Copyright Codes for music: Code: H90WWKAQHJ706IBY Code: OG2LN3WZZPLFEH1U Code: 4HERUOXM1AFECFL4
