Hiking through these beautiful Florida swamps and experiencing some interesting Native American Indian history along the way. For hundreds and thousands of years tribes like the Tocobaga Indians frequented these places at least 500-1000 years ago and built villages and mound sites. They utilized these areas for various purposes over the generations for hunting, dwelling, ceremonial and even for burial purposes. With so many layers of history in these woods it can be a challenge to know who exactly was here over the years but during the 1800's the Seminole Indians also utilized these sites as well. The mounds you see in this video are consistent of limestone and were built up over very long periods of time. Natives utilized the materials to make tools and weapons and temper pottery as well. The river here can be traced up towards where the Ocale Indians once thrived as well so throughout history many territories connected these tribes. Today the area is much different than it once was but traces from the past can be observed, a sense of history can be felt as you roam through the woods here. During the 1700's through the early 1900's much of this area was logged out for timber and turpentine operations as well took place nearby later in the 1800's. I enjoy the scenery and these wild spaces along with the wildlife. It is incredible, thank you for watching and enjoy the adventure!
