In this video I leave Free Ascent moored in Coffin Bay, South Australia. After driving from Coffin to Sydney I fly from Sydney to Thursday Island at the tip of the Cape York peninsula of Queensland. My friends had asked me to help crew their yacht Merakai from TI to Indonesia and the closest official port of entry to Indonesia at Tual. This was a distance of about 1,200 kilometres or 650 nautical miles. We had a pleasant downwind sail in the south-east trade winds but for part of the voyage we had to thread our way through the hundreds of substantial Indonesian fishing vessels fishing the relatively shallow Arafura Sea north of Australia. After arriving at the islands near Tual in the evening, we were travelling in the dark up a straight between islands and suddenly only just missed running into an unlit floating fishing platform. So we immediately found a suitable anchorage to wait for daylight before continuing on. We arrived at Tual harbour, cleared in at customs, then did some exploring and diving before I had to fly back to Sydney via local flights to Denpasar in Bali (a familiar spot for me), then direct overseas flight to Sydney .
