Stuck in Delta, Utah in a very difficult situation. This is about a 3 day lesson in patience & honesty. What happens when a major storm gets between you and your destination? In flying, we call this a "Go / No-Go" decision, which could be the difference between life or potential death. After "temporarily" landing in Delta (KDTA) for a "quick" fuel stop, I realized an incoming storm was now a major threat. Wind & dust swirled about the airport as clouds blanketed the entire flight. The pathway home was mountainous and it looked very dangerous ahead. I reflect on how variable weather conditions play a major role in aviation. I discuss how I used aviation maps, automated weather observation (AWOS) reports from the few airports, National Weather Service reports, and the GOES satellites to gather data. I discuss how low pressure (storm) cells interact with mountainous terrain - called "orographic lifting" - coupled with a cold front and rising air. The bottom line -- "It’s better to be on the ground wishing you were in the air than in the air wishing you were on the ground." After 3 days I departed, still with cloud cover, but with a solid & safe plan.
