Florida Program Trains Crews to Airlift Injured Police K9s

First responders in Florida are receiving specialized training to treat and transport injured law enforcement K9s by helicopter. The program, one of only four in the nation, uses a $33,000 medical simulator named Hero to replicate real-life canine trauma scenarios. Crews train in advanced life support techniques specifically designed for police dogs injured in the line of duty. After a previous emergency required a 50-minute drive to reach veterinary care, flight teams developed a system to close the gap in pre-hospital K9 treatment. Now, helicopter units carry specialized K9 medical kits and have certified multiple sheriff’s offices and fire rescue agencies across the state.
