Alligator label blues artist Lonnie Brooks is a man of many names. Born Lee Baker in Dubuisson, Louisiana, he took the stage & recording name Guitar Junior until he discovered that this name was already in existence in the blues world. Under the Guitar Junior sobriquet he established a presence with the regional hit, "The Crawl" on Goldband which was subsequently covered by the Fabulous Thunderbirds. This track and its colleague on the album, "Love me, love me" were the flipsides of two more obviously bluesy singles on Mercury. They both have a very distinct swamp flavour. Lonnie returned to the swamp with a cover of the swamp pop favourite "This should go on forever" on the excellent album he recorded in '99 along with other vets Philip Walker and Long John Hunter. Dig this one out - it's on YouTube. In 1975 an LP came out in the UK with a rather lengthy title, "The Other Song Of The South: Louisiana Rock'n'Roll". It was a compilation put together by much loved and respected r'n'r critic Bill Millar, though that's not really the right noun, lets just say music lover. The tracks were all from the Mercury label including some that had been purchased from small Southern Louisiana labels. The content, by and large, was music from the genre that years later got christened Swamp Pop. Other than a tiny scattering of singles this was the first real airing of swamp pop outside of Louisiana and East Texas, and many of us, self included, owe Bill a massive vote of thanks for the album.
