Welcome to A Psychologist Talks! On today's episode, I try to answer the varied-but-similar questions: why is my attention/memory/sense of myself so bad? Well, there's a lot of things that affect this, but we're going to focus on how CHRONIC DEPRESSION can cause all of these things. And, importantly, this does NOT have to be trauma, given our seeming penchant for defining everything through the lens of trauma these days. For real: chronic depression BY ITSELF can cause massive holes in not just our sense of ourselves but also our literal ability to remember our pasts. Note: comorbid social anxiety seems likely to amplify this problem. KEY QUOTE "They are surviving, they are not necessarily thriving. And with that comes potential deficits in attention, memory, and - perhaps most painful of all - deficits in episodic memories; the ability to form cohesive narratives about the self."
