On April 10, 2021 the Valley Railroad operated 3 excursions to Goodspeed using steam locomotive 40. For those unfamiliar the Valley Railroad (Essex Steam Train) is a tourist railroad based in Essex, CT. The railroad began running excursions in 1971 first running between Essex, CT and Deep River, CT. They later expanded to Chester in the late 70's, then Haddam in 1993, then to Goodspeed in the late 90's. The Valley Railroad operates mostly steam pulled excursions but does run diesel powered excursions. Currently the Valley Railroad offers a wide variety of excursions. One of the most known excursions is the Essex Steam Train & Riverboat excursion which passengers are able to ride the train and sail along the Connecticut River. The Valley Railroad also offers special 90 minute rides between Essex and Goodspeed (like in this video). A new feature to the railroad is the Railbike Adventures which depending on the day run to Old Saybrook. The Valley Railroad also operates the Essex Clipper Dinner Train. In this video you will see locomotive 40 pull a 5 car consist of old passenger equipment between Essex and Goodspeed. 40 was built in 1920 by the American Locomotive Works in Dunkirk, NY for the Portland, Astoria & Pacific Railroad and numbered 101. However the PA&P was never completed and the locomotive sat untouched. It was then sold to the Minarets & Western Railroad which used the engine to haul lumber & logs. After the M&W could not financially keep the locomotive it was then sold to the Southern Pacific. It was again sold later on to the Aberdeen & Rockfish Railroad which renumbered it to 40. It was used to pull passenger trains until the 1950's. When passenger services ceased on the A&R it sat in an engine house until the 1970's when the Valley Railroad finally acquired it. Locomotive 40 is a 2-8-2 Mikado and can hold 8 tons of coal and 5000 gallons of water. 40 will charge along the Connecticut River with scenes at old railroad stations and flagstops as well as several crossings along the line. 40 will also climb up the grade at dock road after having to stop for trespassers fishing on the bridge. 3025 will also make an appearance running lite for 'Your hand on the throttle' excursions.
