The "Nichos: Mexican Folk Art" class is offered at Plano Public Library annually. This full class video goes over the history of nichos and gives a demonstration of library staff making a nicho. What is a nicho? Nichos are a type of folk art popular in several Central and South American countries. They resemble mini dioramas or shadow boxes and usually incorporate Catholic and/or indigenous imagery, although some may also incorporate pop culture elements or even personal artifacts (such as photos of loved ones, pets, and celebrities or simply objects reflecting personal interests). Nichos are mini altars decorated with found objects and trinkets. The art form is reminiscent of the larger Catholic retablos. More info about nichos: They are mini altars/shrines resembling dioramas or shadow boxes in glass casings They can be decorated with bold, colorful reused and found objects, giving them a kitschy look. Mexican nichos commonly depict Catholic saints and Dia de los Muertos imagery, but that's not a necessity. The subject of the nicho can be anything the artist desires. Mexican nichos are usually made from aluminum or wood The figures and miniature calacas (skeletons) are made out of clay, plaster, or papier-mâché See the library calendar for upcoming art workshops: https://plano.libnet.info/events?r=th...
