Did you find out you had MOLD and then find out you had an overgrowth of a bacteria called ACTINOMYCETES? This video explains all about what actinobacteria are, how growth can get out of hand, and what to do about cleaning and remediation. 6 MAIN REASONS ACTINOBACTERIA LEVELS CAN ELEVATE: 1. Moisture: Actinomycetes thrive in moist environments. Water damage from leaks, floods, or high humidity creates ideal conditions for their growth. Additionally, indoor water features or reservoirs like fish tanks, hot tubs, fountains, or swimming pools can harbor actinomycetes if not properly maintained. 2. Organic Material: These gram-positive bacteria feed on organic materials like soil, wood, drywall, cellulose and insulation. Things like dirt crawlspaces, potted plants and indoor gardens, pets that go outside and track dirt in, wearing shoes indoors, can all contribute to elevated actinomycetes in house dust and on belongings. Water damage to organic building materials also provides an ideal environment and a food source for actinomycetes. 3. Poor Ventilation: Lack of ventilation and air movement creates humidity further promoting the growth of actinomycetes. 4. Co-Colonization with Mold: Actinomycetes, like we mentioned in our previous post, often grow alongside mold AND feed on mold, which also thrives in these SAME conditions. In other words, if the environment fosters mold growth, it is also fostering an ideal habitat for actinomycetes. 5. People and pets: Actinomycetes are a natural component of the human and animal microbiota, residing predominantly in the oral cavity, gastrointestinal tract, and female genital tract. Thus, where people and animals are congregating, living, and breathing, actinomycetes are also present and part of the environment. Normal cleaning, dusting, and vacuuming should keep levels manageable, but studies show that when hygiene is poor and/or humidity is over 50%, levels of indoor actinobacteria rise. 6. Mold growth: Where there’s MOLD, opportunistic bacteria often grow. BOTTOM LINE: Address the MOLD to keep actinomycetes at bay!
