This World ‘s largest westerly genus was named after Queen Victoria in 1852. Its rounded and upturned pads/leaves grow up to 10 feet that float on the water. These leaves are supported with a rib underside and fix to a submerged stalk that go up to 8 meters (26 feet). They are normally embedded to lake or river bottom in nature. The underneath of leaves is with sharp spines to protect from herbivorous fish. The upper surface of Victoria leaves has water repellent properties. Air trapped inside ribs on underside keep the Victoria leaves floating. Victoria leaves can stand around 30 kg. Victoria flower lifespan is two days. Its flowers open in night and close in daytime. First day flower is white and consider as a female flower with pineapple scent. Second day flower is not having scent and in deep red purple colour which works as male flower. Victoria pollination happens by beetles who are attracted to the scent of the first day flower and trapped in the morning when the flower closes. During the day Victoria flower changes from a female flower to male flower and produces the pollen. The next day night when Victoria flower open the beetle can go away with pollen coated and can fertilize the next day flower that completes the pollination process. Victoria seeds that are kept in 26- Celsius (80 Fahrenheit) water gets germinated and can be planted in containers/pots in Spring. In winter, such pots/containers should be kept in green houses or inside to protect from mist, wintry weather. Victoria flower is around 25-40 cm wide and has 4 sepals that is 12 cm in length and 8 cm in width. It has stamens around 150-200 and petal count is 50-70. In natural habitats, Victoria has three varieties. They are 1. Victoria Amazonia- This has leaves of up to 8 feet in width. – flower size is 40 cm, its natural habitat is Amazon River basin, such as oxbow lakes and bayous (Amazon Basin is in South America. It is in Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, Guyana, Peru, Suriname, and Venezuela.), its Leaf edge height- 15 cm. Underneath of the leaf is red. 2. Victoria Cruzinia - This has leaves of up to 6 feet in width. - flower size is 25 cm; its natural habitat is Parana-Paraguay basin. (These are two south Central South America rivers that are running through Brazil, Paraguay, and Argentina) it Leaf edge height -20 cm. Underneath of the leaf Is purple. 3. Victoria Boliviana - This has leaves of up to 10.5 feet in width. - flower size is 30 cm Its Natural habitat is Bolivian wetlands. Its Leaf edge height- 8 cm. There are many hybrids of Victoria as well. It is well cultivated in small garden as well. As other water lilies, they also can adopt to small water surfaces and if fertilization is done properly, we can get flowers of Victoria in small water environments as well.
