I am sick of these chugging people and the growing dominance they have in our High Streets. Their dishonesty and manipulative tactics need to be punished and stopped. Local government supports them because they earn money from them - in Bedford £600 per day is typical. This video shows a few of the tactics used by one member of a 6-chugger team working for the National Deaf Children's Charity. What can we do about it? If they bother you and you want them gone, then here's my list: 1. SUBSCRIBE to to this channel so we can stay in touch about future ideas and plans. 2. LIKE and SHARE this video to get it seen by more people. We need numbers to make change happen. 3. Email your local council with a formal complaint saying you object to the presence of these people in your town centre. Generally the council sanction them and in fact charge them money to be there. Bedford charge about £600 a day. 4, Email the company or charity driving this activity, telling them you don't like it. 5. Tell the people who approach you that you don't like them doing it. I have notified the National Children's Deaf Society of this video, and offered them the opportunity to correct any errors they see and to offer their opinion on anything I have shown or said. I will detail their responses, if any, in this description. selling poor UPDATE: The charity responded. I have summarised their response below and my counter-response below: 1. WE RELY ON FACE-TO-FACE COLLECTION FOR THE BULK OF OUR FUNDING I am not objecting to face-to-face fundraising, I am objecting to manipulative pressure selling of the kind shown in my video. So you have either inadvertently or deliberately missed the point of my video, and in either case, that is not impressive, Dipesh. 2. WE WATCH COMPLAINTS VERY AND HAVE RECEIVED VERY FEW I'm guessing you won't want to tell me how many? Anyway, the fact that you get few complaints is not, in my view, evidence that it's OK - the video seems to me to be evidence that it is not. It seems far more likely that the public are lazy, or conflict-averse, or resigned to the general decline in this and other areas of life. ====================================================== ]]]]]]]] So - You can complain to this charity at support@ndcs.org.uk ======================================================= 3. OUR FUND-RAISERS ARE WELL-TRAINED My response: It looks like you have trained them very well in the art of chugging - widespread manipulation of ordinary people through the devious tactics described in this video. 4. WE ARE REGULATED BY THE FUND RAISING REGULATOR My Response: Huzzar! I have spoken to them, and found that discussion to be not just depressing, but probably the main reason why the floodgates are now open on this kind of street wrestling. There is a video in part about that here: • Charity Bullying (Chuggers) in our High St... So - depressing but not at all surprising. If you complaint to the architects of something offensive, that that thing is offensive, don't expect them to do anything except justify the offense. I think the biggest take-away here is that they carefully watch complaints for signs of blow-back. So my advice to you is to BLOW BACK HARD. ANOTHER PIECE OF ADVICE: You can write to the fundraising regulator at fr@pagefield.co.uk or fill in their formal complaint form here: https://www.fundraisingregulator.org....
