Schluter systems bathroom start to finish, Part 6 Kerdi Drain grate assembly and shower floor The Schluter Kerdi Drain grate assembly has three components that are put together to form the grate of the shower floor drain and installed with the tile on the drain bonding flange. The Kerdi drain grate when assembled has some room for adjustment, both height and position. The grate is installed at the same time as the shower floor tile and positioned to the most desirable location within the tile grid. The height of the drain is also adjusted so that the top of the grate is exactly even with the tile floor surface or just slightly below. This is done to avoid water pooling at the drain assembly. The bottom part of the grate assembly must be fully packed in thinset to insure that it is locked in place. With a small shower floor, as in this video, I usually will lay all the tile and dry fit the entire floor and then install the tile with thinset so as to not have to stop to cut and fit tile.
