In the 70s and 80s, the United States Army was looking to revolutionize its light tank design. More specifically, the Army was investigating if a light tank with significant firepower, speed, and survivability could be transported by air, either by cargo plane or by helicopter. In order to investigate this, the HSTV-L (High Survivability Test Vehicle Lightweight) was created in conjunction with the HIMAG (High Mobility and Agility) test bed. The HSTV-L's gun was its most interesting design choice. The 75mm gun was smoothbore, could fire one round every second, used cased telescoped ammunition, and was dual feed. Powered by a 650hp gas turbine engine and supported by a non-adjustable hydropneumatic suspension system, the HSTV-L was incredibly mobile.
