The Bombardier Mark III are the newest driverless metro trains for the Kelana Jaya Line in Kuala Lumpur. They are manufactured in Millhaven, Ontario, Canada and were inaugurated in December 2016 after about a year of testing. Also locally known as the Kuala Lumpur Additional Vehicle, these are identical to the Mark III of the Vancouver SkyTrain. 14 sets are either in service or testing (currently 10 are in service), and an additional 27 sets will be delivered in 2020. The Mark III SkyTrain features a new exterior styling and a brighter interior, and like the Mark II, are fully driverless and use linear induction motor propulsion originally developed by Urban Transportation Development Corporation (UTDC), a predecessor of Bombardier, and the linear motor is a patent of Krauss-Maffei, a West German company that developed a maglev transit vehicle that stopped development in the late 1970's. UTDC then bought that patent to be fitted to a conventional steel-wheeled rail vehicle which led to the development of the Mark I, first used on the Terminal Ave. demo guideway in Vancouver in 1983 (now part of the Expo Line), and the Scarborough RT in 1985 in Toronto. The Mark II debuted on the Kelana Jaya Line when it opened in 1998 and first used in Vancouver in 2002. Other systems that use the same technology include the Detroit People Mover, JFK Airtrain, Yongin Everline, and Beijing Airport Express.
