7 January 2023. Changsha. A warm winter afternoon. Huangxing Road Pedestrian Street. From Simenkou in the north to Nanmenkou in the south, 838 meters long . Its history dates to the 1930s—originally called Nanzheng Road, renamed in 1941 to honor Huang Xing, a leader of the 1911 Revolution . Renovated and reopened in 2002 . ——— A friend back from the US said: "It kind of reminds me of Times Square." I paused. Then understood. Not the look—the feel. The rhythm of crowds. The frequency of neon. Sound waves from everywhere. And that momentary daze when you stand in the midst of it all. ——— Every Chinese city seems to have one. Shanghai Nanjing Road. Harbin Central Street. Changsha Huangxing Road. Wuhan Jianghan Road. Guangzhou Beijing Road. Xiamen Zhongshan Road. Beijing Wangfujing. Chongqing Jiefangbei. Nanjing Confucius Temple. Xi'an大唐 Everbright City. Chengdu Chunxi Road. Shenzhen Dongmen… Walking, I wondered: Could these be a contemporary version of Along the River During the Qingming Festival? Zhang Zeduan painted Kaifeng's bustling markets—shops, stalls, carts, pedestrians, all walks of life. Today's pedestrian streets have chain stores instead of stalls, crowds instead of carts. But that feeling—"people mountain people sea, everything gathered here"—seems unchanged. ——— Huang Xing's bronze statue stands at the entrance. 7.8 meters tall, erected in 2004. Changsha people's meeting point: "See you under Huang Xing's statue!" . The base bears reliefs of key moments in his life: founding Huaxinghui, establishing Tongmenghui, commanding Wuchang Uprising, partnering with Sun Yat-sen . In suit and coat, returning to his hometown after years away . Below: people waiting, people taking selfies, people just passing by, glancing up, moving on. ——— Street sculptures: the Old Changsha series. Stinky Tofu Vendor—lifelike, carrying his load . Cooling Off—grandparent and child resting on a mat . Shoe Repair, Pot Mending, Shaving & Ear Cleaning, Peep Show—dying street trades, cast in bronze, standing amid the bustling pedestrian street . In 2004, this series won a special award at the Third National Urban Sculpture Exhibition . ——— People everywhere. Queues at Chayan Yuese. Photos in front of Wenheyou. Sugar-oil cakes eaten while walking. Someone crouching, playing with a cat. Sounds from everywhere—shop music, vendor calls, children laughing, lovers whispering. In the warm winter sun, it all feels light, soft, perfect for strolling. ——— Where do we begin to understand a city? We begin with its pedestrian street—that crowded, neon-lit stretch a friend called "kind of like Times Square." We begin with its statue—Huang Xing, waiting and being waited for. We begin with its sculptures—dying trades cast in bronze. We begin with its sounds—Chayan Yuese's numbering system, the sizzle of stinky tofu stalls, Changsha dialect in the crowd. ——— I walked slowly that afternoon. 838 meters. Took a long time. Not because of the crowds. Because I wanted to see how many kinds of lives this street holds.
