“Stupid Cupid” by Howard Greenfield (lyrics) and Neil Sedaka (music), was first recorded by Connie Francis and released in 1958. The song marked a turning point in Francis’s career, as it shifted her image from a singer of traditional ballads to a performer with broader appeal in the emerging teen pop and rock-and-roll market. It became one of her early successes, reaching No. 14 on the Billboard Hot 100 and earning a spot as a staple of late-1950s pop music. Lyrically, the song is lighthearted and playful, with the singer addressing Cupid, the Roman god of love, and blaming him for causing romantic trouble by making her fall for someone who is distracting and difficult. The music reflects the carefree style of the era, featuring a catchy melody, simple chord progressions, and a moderate rock-and-roll beat, all wrapped in a concise runtime. “Stupid Cupid” enjoyed cultural resonance beyond its initial chart success. It appeared in films and television shows set in or evoking the 1950s and 1960s, highlighting its status as a nostalgic teen pop anthem. In 2001, Mandy Moore performed the song in the Disney film The Princess Diaries, reintroducing it to a younger generation. Over the years, it has been covered by numerous artists in different styles. Neil Sedaka himself recorded a version in 1959, while Wanda Jackson (1961) gave it a rockabilly twist. Other renditions include Patsy Cline, who performed it live in the early 1960s, and Carla Thomas, who added a soulful flavor in 1964. More recent performances by singers such as Paloma Faith have kept the song alive in retro-inspired sets. Today, “Stupid Cupid” is remembered as an enduring example of pre-Beatles American teen pop—simple, catchy, and emblematic of a transitional moment in popular music when youthful themes and rock-and-roll rhythms were becoming dominant. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Amber Rachelle & The Sweet Potatoes is a New Orleans–based jazz ensemble founded by vocalist Amber Rachelle in late 2021. The group, typically a six-piece band, specializes in swing-era jazz with repertoire spanning 1930s swing, jump blues, early R&B, and New Orleans funk. Amber Rachelle, who began as a street busker in Seattle at 17, moved to New Orleans at 22 and quickly immersed herself in the city’s jazz culture. The band debuted at Maison in March 2020, but their live momentum resumed in 2021 after pandemic disruptions, leading to regular performances at venues like The Spotted Cat and the Jazz Museum. Their debut album, Too Sweet, was released in July 2023 and received praise as a lively dance-friendly record with Amber’s dynamic, characterful vocals spotlighted by critics. The band followed up with a second album, Pipin' Hot!, in late October 2024. Within a few years, the group secured a regular Monday-night residency at The Spotted Cat and earned spots at notable events, including the French Quarter Fest 2024 and New Orleans Swing dance showcases. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Lyrics: Stupid Cupid, you're a real mean guy (Stupid Cupid) I'd like to clip your wings so you can't fly (Stupid Cupid) I'm in love and it's a crying shame (Stupid Cupid) And I know that you're the one to blame Hey hey, set me free Stupid Cupid, stop picking on me I can't do my homework and I can't think straight (Stupid Cupid) I meet him every morning 'bout a half past eight (Stupid Cupid) I'm acting like a lovesick fool (Stupid Cupid) You've even got me carrying his books to school (Stupid Cupid) Hey hey, set me free Stupid Cupid, stop picking on me You mixed me up for good right from the very start Hey, go play, Robin Hood, with somebody else's heart You've got me jumping like a crazy clown (Stupid Cupid) And I don't feature what you're putting down (Stupid Cupid) Since I kissed his loving lips of wine (Stupid Cupid) The thing that bothers me is that I like it fine (Stupid Cupid) Hey hey, set me free Stupid Cupid, stop picking on me You've got me jumping like a crazy clown (Stupid Cupid) And I don't feature what you're putting down (Stupid Cupid) Since I kissed his loving lips of wine (Stupid Cupid) The thing that bothers me is that I like it fine (Stupid Cupid) Hey hey, set me free Stupid Cupid, stop picking on me Hey hey, set me free Stupid Cupid, stop picking on me Stupid Cupid Stupid Cupid Stupid Cupid
