🏰 A Brief History of Old Vaynor (St Gwynno’s) Church 🌿 Early Origins (8th–9th Century) The site of Old Vaynor Church is believed to be ancient, with traditions placing its origins as early as AD 714 or AD 874. It was dedicated to St Gwynno, and the early church was likely a simple wooden structure. ⚔️ Destruction in 1291 In 1291, the original wooden church was burned down during the Battle of Maesyfaenor, a violent conflict between two Norman lords—Humphrey de Bohun, Earl of Brecknock, and Gilbert de Clare, Earl of Gloucester—over control of the nearby Morlais ridge. The battle caused heavy casualties, and many of the dead were buried in a mound near the church known as Cae Burdydd (“field of slaughter”). 🕍 Rebuilding in 1295 A new stone church was built on the site around 1295, replacing the destroyed wooden structure. This medieval church stood for centuries and served the parish long after a newer church was built nearby. 🕯 Decline in the 19th Century By the mid‑1800s, the old church had become dilapidated. The influential Crawshay family funded the construction of a new St Gwynno’s Church, completed in 1870, after which the old building was abandoned. 🏚 Present Condition Today, Old Vaynor Church survives as a picturesque ruin in the Brecon Beacons area, valued for its atmospheric setting and deep historical roots. The remains reflect centuries of local history—from early medieval worship to Norman conflict and Victorian change.
