Discover the story of Neath Abbey — once one of the most powerful monastic centres in Wales. Founded in 1130 by the Norman knight Sir Richard de Granville, the abbey grew rapidly in wealth and influence, and by the late 13th century it ranked among the richest in the country. At its height, around 50 monks lived within its walls, supported by an even larger community of lay brothers who worked the abbey’s vast estates. Their daily labour likely included everything from farming to mining coal for everyday use. Centuries later, the Industrial Revolution transformed the site almost beyond recognition. The peaceful abbey became a bustling industrial complex, housing copper‑smelting furnaces, workshops, workers’ cottages, and even an ironworks next door. Today, its atmospheric ruins stand as a striking reminder of both its sacred origins and its dramatic industrial past.
