Explore the fascinating story of Neath Castle, standing proudly in the heart of Neath. First established between 1114 and 1130 by Robert, Earl of Gloucester — who also founded Margam Abbey — the original fortification has evolved dramatically over the centuries. The stone structures visible today were added later, including the impressive northern gatehouse built in the 1320s. The castle’s history is far from peaceful. In 1321 it was almost completely destroyed during the conflict between Edward II’s favourite, Thomas le Despenser, and a group of rebellious English lords. It was rebuilt soon after, only to become the refuge of Edward II himself before his capture and grim death in 1327. Today, Neath Castle remains an atmospheric reminder of medieval power struggles and shifting fortunes. Please note: repair work is currently underway on the rear castle wall. Originally planned for the autumn, the restoration has been delayed due to weather conditions and the need for lime mortar to be applied within a specific temperature range. Work is expected to resume in the spring.
