Neural Networks and Deep Learning

We introduce neural networks and the deep learning framework. We use a simple two-layer neural network to illustrate how these models learn nonlinear patterns from data. We then explain how to train neural networks for regression tasks and show that significantly increasing the number of parameters—the key idea in the deep learning paradigm—can improve performance when overfitting is properly managed. Finally, we describe how neural networks can be applied to classification problems.
