Thiess had held the Wollongong domestic waste contract since 1987 when wheelie bins were introduced, starting with rear loaders and quickly converting to side loaders, while covering a number of different contract periods with a range of trucks. In 2012 Remondis bought out the Thiess waste services division and continued through to the awarding of a new contract commencing in 2014, which has been maintained until the current day, and will extend through to and beyond 2027 when yet another residential collections contract begins! The old MJE Hino in this upload was put to work in 1998 alongside at least six other identical trucks. At the time the original 240L garbage bin saw a changed use for garden organics and new red lidded 80L, 120L or 240L bins were rolled out for weekly rubbish runs. When I visited, I recall there was also a 6x4 version of this truck, a 4x2 Sidepak, two slightly younger ACCOs and later model Superior Paks doing garbage runs, obviously with area growth and population increase demanding additional vehicles. There was some cool variety at the time and it was impressive how long these older units were kept going! I already shared a video of truck 0885 years ago from 2011, whereas what we see here of different truck 0888 was from my initial 2010 visit, with it emptying separate lines of 34 and 18 bins in between a couple modern unit buildings. From what I’ve seen, Wollongong has been very big on small wheelie bins for MUDs, not bulk containers.
