If you don't use this method, you may damage the hood of your BMW i8 when you lift the wiper arm on the passenger side. This method ensures that the wiper blades on the BMW i8 are in a position where you can lift them away from the windshield in order to clean the wiper blades or the windshield, lift the blades away from winter weather to prevent freezing, or to replace the blades. Simply follow this How To procedure and you'll be good to go. I received some great advice from edpm3 from the bimmerpost forum. This is great: "I strongly recommend that before removing the blade, lay a pillow or a thick newspaper on the windshield to protect the point where the wiperless arm would make contact if it accidentally fell. My M3's windshield cracked when it happened to me and the i8's windshield is a whole lot thinner and way more expensive. Better safe than sorry."
