This hike wastes no time. Mount Royal rises straight above Frisco, Colorado and serves up huge views over Dillon Reservoir, Tenmile Range, and town—after a stout climb and a spicy scree descent. Trail facts: Distance: ~4 miles out-and-back Elevation gain: ~1,377 ft Time: 2.5–3 hours for most hikers Surface: packed dirt, rock, and loose scree Season: year-round (snowshoes/microspikes in winter) What you’ll see Early on, you’ll cross a small bridge and walk a short stretch of bike path before the grade kicks up. The climb grows steeper by the minute, trading trees for wide-open views. From the summit, the payoff is massive—panoramas in nearly every direction. Heads up This trail is steep and the upper section is covered in loose rock. Trekking poles help a ton. I slipped once on the way down; my buddy Kyle actually fractured his arm here on a different day. Falls on the descent are common—take your time. Logistics Parking fills fast at the trailhead; street parking down the road worked for us (watch signs). Trail starts just off the highway in Frisco. In winter, this makes a great snowshoe or microspike outing. What I Recomend Taking Poles, grippy shoes, 1–2L water, wind layer, gloves. In winter: microspikes/snowshoes depending on conditions.
