Future of ACA "Obamacare" subsidies uncertain as Senate decision looms, impacting millions

The future of enhanced subsidies for the Affordable Care Act (ACA), also known as Obamacare, is still up in the air. "Unfortunately, that's been a political football over the years," President and Founder of U.S.-RX Care Renzo Luzzatti said. "There's been funding and defunding and funding and defunding." How did we get here? During the government shutdown last year, extending those subsidies was a main focal point. Eventually, Senate Republicans and Democrats struck a deal to reopen the government on Nov. 12, and planned to move forward with a vote on those subsidies in December. That time came and went, and the enhanced subsidies expired on January 1. Now, Luzzatti warns Americans and Washingtonians are already feeling the impact. "They're going to start feeling it now," he said. "Premiums are going up if they're not already up." A study by KFF estimates that ACA enrollees, on average, will see their costs rise from about $900 to $1,900. And now, fewer households are also eligible for premium tax credits. The income cutoff for those tax credits is now a household that exceeds 400% of the federal poverty threshold. That cutoff means about $62,600 for a single person, $84,600 for a two-person home, and $128,600 for a family of four.
