This 12 min. video highlights the trail building efforts of the Long Distance Trail Crew rebuilding the New York Long Path on Tallman Mountain. LDTC worked on this project over the course of 3 years. We are the Long Distance Trails Crew. Formed in 2011, We are a community of volunteers who build, maintain and protect public access hiking trails west of the Hudson River in New York State and a proud and active member of the New York New Jersey Trail Conference. This project was to rebuild a section of the New York Long Path on Tallman Mountain. This section is very steep, (160’ elevation ) and required approximately 220 stone steps, numerous sections of sturdy crib-wall and several pause landings. Of course all the steps, landings etc. are built from the bottom up. This is a slow dangerous process. Working on a very steep, unstable hillside was our biggest challenge. We started this project on June 2nd. 2023 (album #168), We were making great progress until a major July storm forced us to pause on August 13th. 2023. (album #173) The storm had severely damaged Bear Mountain Park. All available PIPC personnel were busy working restoring the park, so harvesting rocks for us was put on hold. In March of 2024, LDTC was called upon to restore sections of the Appalachian Trail in Bear Mountain Park that had been washed out by the same storm. We returned to the Long Path project on Tallman Mountain on June 14th. 2024 (album #198) and worked continuously to December 8th. which was the end of our 2024 season. (album #205) We returned to Tallman on March 21st. 2025 (album #207) and completed the project on August 10th. (album 217) On September 6th. there was an official trail opening and ribbon cutting followed by a celebration BBQ In this video you will see the fruits of our labors. All built by Volunteers.
