Join us on the world's first transcontinental railroad, linking the two oceans: the Atlantic and the Pacific. The Panama Canal is much older than the Canal, although less well-known. It has spanned the country from the Pacific to the Atlantic since 1855. The line lost its relevance when the United States Transcontinental Railroad connected the two coasts of North America. Today, freight trains run along its tracks, as well as a passenger train that allows tourists to enjoy the views. Since its opening in 1914 by the Americans, the 82-kilometer-long Panama Canal has been one of Central America's main economic factors. This colossal project saves ships almost three weeks of travel time on the journey from the West Coast of the United States to the East Coast. In 1999, it became the property of Panama. More than 40% of the state's income comes from this gigantic engineering feat, of which the inhabitants of the small country are very proud. Although considerably older, the Panama Railroad is less well-known. It opened in 1855 and has been crossing the country long before the Canal, from the Pacific to the Atlantic. Long freight trains, as well as a passenger train, run along the 77-kilometer stretch between the port of Balboa in Panama City, on the Pacific Ocean, and the port of Cristóbal, on the Atlantic side. During the week, the latter makes a daily round-trip service. It is mainly tourists who travel aboard the panoramic car and enjoy the unique views over the Canal. On the small islands off the Caribbean coast, you can visit the Kuna people, an indigenous tribe with their own way of life. The old town of Panama City invites you to wander through its streets.
