In today’s episode we’ll be interviewing Mr. Bunn Head of Sales at Bates Hats, based Jermyn Street, London, England. Simply Handsome 247: What is your title at Bates Hats? Mr. Bunn (Bates Hats):I am the senor sales associate. After I took the company out of the corner of a shirt shop, which we found very claustrophobic at the time, we were able to move to this well-deserved premises, number 37 Jermyn Street. Simply Handsome 247: What is your history with Bates Hats? Mr. Bunn (Bates Hats): My personal history is that I came to work here on a part-time basis. I came to this job clueless of the knowledge and tradition behind it. As I worked here, I grew and discovered the beauty that goes into making a simply product such as the Trilby Hat, you discover different materials, out sources and different quality of products. Simply Handsome 247: What is the history of Bates Hats? Mr. Bunn (Bates Hats): Bats Hats was established in 1898; it was originally on Sloane Street and owned by Mr. Edward and Timothy Bates. It soon moved to Jermyn street, whereas to be for a gentlemen’s hatters. We are mostly famous for store number 21A at the lower end of Jermyn street. It was then bought by Mr. Michael Booth who owned Hilditch Key shirt markers; we were trading in the corner of Hilditch Key store for a short eight years, then we moved to our current location of 37 Jermyn street. Simply Handsome 247: How important is heritage to Bates Hats? Mr. Bunn (Bates Hats): Heritage is very important to Bates Hats. Sixty to seventy years ago, everyone would wear a hat. It was your accessory it was the final piece to the puzzle. Unfortunately it has died out slightly, but it was Jermyn’s streets favourite hatters, so to have it back in an expended shop and introducing a new collection is extremely important. It is becoming increasingly more popular, and we have more products than ever. Simply Handsome 247: How are you reaching a younger customer? Mr. Bunn (Bates Hats): When it comes to targeting a specific market, you have to look at the well-liked demand in the product which already exists, from there you adjust and design to what the well-liked demand is; within our product is the lower crown and a slightly narrower brim, also referred to as a ‘stingy-brim’.
