This Open edX Conference 2022 session will discuss the need to reliably assess learning remotely for credentials and how to leverage platform capabilities combined with research-based practices to address concerns of cheating in online courses. During the 2020 shift to fully remote learning for most students, the concerns over an assumed increase in cheating in such environments became a significant point of discussion, especially for those new to online teaching. Many schools have addressed these worries with some form of 3rd party digital proctoring services. Given the costs and issues with privacy, equity, and additional student stress, we focused our efforts on the prevention of dishonest behaviors instead of finding ways to catch them in our MOOCs using the Open edX platform.
