Although we have visited Iceland many times previously, this was our first visit to the North Area of Iceland including parts of the Diamond Circle Area. We normally fly into Iceland to the airport at Keflavik, near Reykjavik. As we always visit in the winter, our concerns have been whether travel to the Nort of Iceland from Keflavik would cause problems as it's a fairly long drive, around 5 hours IF the roads are clear. Recently though, EasyJet have started to fly direct from Gatwick to Akureyri, so we thought we would take the opportunity to visit the North by flying direct. We always hire a car, so after landing at Akureyri we were quickly on our way and enjoying the fantastic scenery of the North. We stopped off at a little place called Svalbarðseyri, nothing really there other than a pretty little lighthouse and walk along by the fjord, but we just love this type of place, totally quiet, away from any tourist hotspots and very relaxing. From there, we headed North along the edge of the fjord and ended up at a little place called Laufás where there is a little church and heritage museum. The museum wasn't open, but still great just to take in the peace and quiet and gorgeous views. After that we drove over towards Mývatn which was the location of our accommodation, the Laxá Hótel. The weather wasn't brilliant and we were expecting heavy snow overnight, so the evening was just a lovely relaxing time in the hotel bar. After watching the rather brilliant movie Eurovision by Will Ferrell, we really wanted to visit the town of Húsavík, mainly just to get a drink in the Jaja Ding Dong Bar, and a photo of us at the Bus Stop as used in the movie :) Unfortunately though, it just rained really heavily all day, the Jaja Ding Dong Bar was closed, and the Bus Stop was only a temp one used during the filming. So we didn't quite achieve what we set out to achieve :) But it was a nice day anyway, and we had a nice Hot Chocolate in a little cafe there. But no decent video or photos from that day :( The next day was much more eventful though :) After more heavy snow overnight, we checked the road conditions and saw that the road to Dettifoss was open, so we drove that way as we really wanted to see that waterfall. Unfortunately we never actually made it there as our car got stuck in snow :( We were stuck for around two and a half hours and after around an hour of seeing NO other cars, we really thought we could be stuck there for much longer :( We were eventually rescued though, and headed back, rather nervously towards our hotel. We did manage to stop at a couple more interesting places though, so the day wasn't a complete waste. We first stopped at the Mývatn Nature Baths and had a couple of rather lovely Hot Chocolates, much needed after trying to dig the car out of the snow for over two hours! We then stopped at Grjótagjá and were hoping to go down into the caves to see the hot water springs. Unfortunately it was very slippery, and I had a really painful back, so we didn't quite manage that. I did manage to get some drone shots though, and some video and a half decent photo of the impressive Hverfjall volcano. We then also stopped at the Lava field Dimmuborgir, which is the home of the Icelandic Yule Lads. This was a lovely place to take a walk around with some interesting lava structure. By this it was late so we made our way back to the hotel, to rest and get ready for Part Two of our North Iceland Adventure.
