You have a sponsor, and you’re engaging with them to do the work, and they’re there for you. That’s great! Just having a sponsor is perfect. I’ve seen people look for too long for the perfect sponsor and then end up without any sponsor at all. Then you relapse, and you’re out. Your best thinking got you where you are today, so the best thing you can do is get a sponsor. You can do this by going to a meeting every single day. I did that. People at those meetings gave me the Big Book, and told me which meetings to go to. I followed the suggestions and pretty much did as I was told. I got a sponsor at my second meeting because I was open to it. At the end of a meeting, the person chairing the meeting will ask if any newcomers need a sponsor - and this is when you should raise your hand. A good way to go about it is to go up to someone who shares during a meeting and, especially if their share resonates with you, to make a connection over that, and then to ask them to be your sponsor. My sponsor met with me every week, and he was always there for me. He had what I wanted in terms of sobriety, and I called him every day. We did step work together, and it helped both of us. But even I had doubts. I ended up meeting someone else who shared similar interests with me regarding my approach to business and a few other things. So I ended up switching sponsors. And my new sponsor was amazing for seven years. And then it was time for a change again. And that’s okay. The point is that I had a sponsor throughout, and each of those sponsors helped keep me clean. Don’t move on and try to fire your sponsor without having another sponsor. If there’s someone else that you do want to switch to, chat with them about it first, and then be honest and upfront with your existing sponsor that you feel that you want to make a change. The guidance that a sponsor will offer in terms of sharing their experience, strength, and hope is invaluable, and you’ll know if your sponsor is right for you if they challenge you to grow in your own recovery.
