We begin this set with a beautiful string quartet arrangement of "Eleanor Rigby". Eleanor Rigby is a song by the English rock band the Beatles from their 1966 album Revolver. The song was written by Paul McCartney and John Lennon. In this unique arrangement, the singer's part is intentionally missing to bring out how well the Beatles utilized string instruments in their songs. Below are lyrics for you to sing along as the melody! [Intro] Ah, look at all the lonely people! Ah, look at all the lonely people! [Verse 1] Eleanor Rigby Picks up the rice in the church where a wedding has been Lives in a dream Waits at the window Wearing the face that she keeps in a jar by the door Who is it for? [Chorus] All the lonely people Where do they all come from? All the lonely people Where do they all belong? [Verse 2] Father McKenzie Writing the words of a sermon that no one will hear No one comes near Look at him working Darning his socks in the night when there's nobody there What does he care? [Chorus] All the lonely people Where do they all come from? All the lonely people Where do they all belong? [Bridge] Ah, look at all the lonely people! Ah, look at all the lonely people! [Verse 3] Eleanor Rigby Died in the church and was buried along with her name Nobody came Father McKenzie Wiping the dirt from his hands as he walks from the grave No one was saved [Outro] All the lonely people (Ah, look at all the lonely people!) Where do they all come from? All the lonely people (Ah, look at all the lonely people!) Where do they all belong? --- The next two pieces are composed by Philip Glass. Philip Glass (born January 31, 1937) is an American composer and pianist. He is widely regarded as one of the most influential composers of the late 20th century. Glass's work has been associated with minimalism, being built up from repetitive phrases and shifting layers. From his famous movie score for "The Hours", we perform for you "Poet Acts" and "Escape". The Hours is the original soundtrack album of the 2002 film The Hours, starring Nicole Kidman, Meryl Streep and Julianne Moore. --- To finish off, we perform "The Mission" by Ennio Morricone. The Mission is the soundtrack from the film of the same name (directed by Roland Joffé), composed, orchestrated, conducted and produced by Ennio Morricone. The work combines liturgical chorales, native drumming, and Spanish-influenced guitars, often in the same track, in an attempt to capture the varying cultures depicted in the film. The main theme, "Falls", remains one of Morricone's most memorable pieces, and has been used in numerous commercials since its original release. The Italian song "Nella Fantasia" ("In My Fantasy") is based on the theme "Gabriel's Oboe" and has been recorded by multiple artists including, Sarah Brightman, Amici Forever, Il Divo, Russell Watson, Hayley Westenra, Jackie Evancho, Katherine Jenkins, Amira Willighagen and Yasuto Tanaka. The soundtrack was nominated for an Academy Award in 1987 and won the Golden Globe Award for Best Original Score and the BAFTA Award for Best Music. It was selected as the 23rd best film score in American Cinema in the American Film Institute's 100 Years of Film Scores. The music was also used during the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City, Utah. We hope you enjoy this string quartet arrangement of one of our most popular songs, "The Mission". --- ETHEL Ralph Farris, viola Kip Jones, violin Dorothy Lawson, cello Corin Lee, violin ETHEL’s Foundation for the Arts Karen Jenkins, Executive Director Producer & Director Molly McBride Sound Recording Randall Crafton Kaleidoscope Sound Director of Photography Tom Hurwitz Lighting Designer Ned Hallick Camera Wolfgang Held David Smith Assistant Camera Laura Nespola Gaffer Kevin Hunt Grip Kelly Richardson DIT Alvah Holmes COVID Safety Captain Fiona Sherman Post Production Supervisor Christopher Boyd Audio Production and Sound Mixing Randall Crafton ETHEL Video Editor Will Keeler --- ETHEL's Signature Sessions: At The Movies "Eleanor Rigby" The Beatles Lennon-McCartney strings by George Martin arranged by Ralph Farris "The Poet Acts" from The Hours Philip Glass arranged by ETHEL "Escape" from The Hours Philip Glass arranged by Cornelius Dufallo and Ralph Farris "Suite" from The Mission Ennio Morricone arranged by Ralph Farris --- Special Thanks Kaleidoscope Sound, Union City, NJ Randall Crafton and Jeremy Delaney The Unitarian Universalist Congregation at Montclair Reverend Scott Howard Gilman Foundation New York, NY The Board of ETHEL’s Foundation for the Arts Recorded live in Montclair, NJ October 23 & 24, 2020 Sound Mixed and Mastered at Kaleidoscope Sound, Union City, NJ
