On December 21, 2013, the shortest day of the year, we begin by watching westbound train 205 blast through Shirley with 35 empty autoracks. We catch him again climbing the grade at Wachusett in an almost year-old 10 MPH speed restriction. Upon arrival at Gardner, I heard Providence & Worcester train GRWO (Gardner - Worcester) call clear of Gardner yard, so the decision was made to head south on the Gardner branch rather than continuing the chase of 205 west. We matched up with the train at Holden as he headed south along the partially-frozen Maple Spring Pond with 24 cars of interchange traffic from PAS. I returned north hoping to catch the empty grain train heading west with a Ferromex unit third out, but I knew that would not be the case after hearing the District 3 dispatcher talking to the second half of the train at the Ayer milling upon arrival at Gardner. We match up with the second half of the grain train at Shirley in the very last light of the day as a single BNSF unit hustles the 54 empty hoppers west. At Fitchburg, the second half of the train would double onto the first half, and the train would head west with a pair of BNSF units and a Ferromex under the cover of darkness. Thanks for watching!
