A look at the arcade games that were released in 1980! A new decade for the arcades! We start to see the technical limitations in the 70s arcade loosen up as developers learn more of their craft! As arcades start to become more popular around the world, businesses take notice - and many fledgling arcade companies pop up - a few of which are still around today! Having said that, 1980 was still very much a year of the Space Invaders clone. Every company had a single-screen vertically facing shooter (some had several!) We see early work by legends like Konami, Nintendo, Namco and Sega struggling to differentiate themselves from the competition without that much success. The real king of 1980 arcades? My vote goes to Atari. They were simply so far ahead of the competition, in both technology (Battlezone) and gameplay (Centipede, Missile Command). Atari set the standards, rather than follow them!
