The Nut-Brown Maiden (Mellow September Days at an Old Norfolk Cottage)

The blackberries are ripe in the hedgerows. Beyond The Old Shop the quiet North Norfolk lane is purple-spangled with dropped berries, lost trophies of skirmishing sparrows. Over at the Hundred Stream, sweet and pungent smoke curls between the willows and alders. The season of mists and mellow fruitfulness is upon us. Darker evenings take me by surprise, long-drawn-out summer nights a distant memory until the wheel turns again. Down on the beach the sky suddenly turns jewel-bright between the storm clouds just as twilight falls. Just as well to bury my hands in the dusky warmth of my still unfinished shawl, first ever crochet project inspired by the colours of my beloved cliff top: the azures and aquas of sea and sky, white-horses, bleached grasses and darkest dock and plantain heads.
