Helen's Hornpipe, written by Philippe Callens for his friend and fellow dancer Helen Battilana in 2013, is a 3-couple mixer set to Roger Davidson's triple-time tune The Healing Physician. The music, and hence the dance, has an unusual structure, namely, an 8-bar A music, which is repeated, followed by a 10 bar B played once. Philippe places the figures in the music masterfully, with the first 4 bars of the B perfectly aligned with the figure he deliberately echoes from Fried Herman's dance Carpe Diem: a half R-hand turn with partner, followed by a single set starting on the left foot, and a swivel to change orientation for a full L-hand hand. When the members of Country Dance*New York prepared for this video session in anticipation of their 2025 Playford Ball, they focused on many aspects of good dancing, but with special attention to the three S's: Smiling, Spotting, and Smooth transitions. How greatly we were helped by the smooth, beautifully ornamented playing of Cynthia Shaw! On a personal note, it was a privilege to teach my friend Philippe the dance Carpe Diem at the 2011 Lenox Assembly and an honor to learn this dance from him. --Paul Ross
