Madilu System (born Jean de Dieu Makiese, 1952–2007) was a prominent Congolese rumba singer and songwriter, known for his expressive voice and signature laugh, who began his career in Kinshasa in 1971. He achieved stardom in the 1980s as a member of Franco's T.P.O.K Jazz, performing hits like "Mamou" and "Mario". After the band's breakup, he launched a successful solo career in the 1990s, releasing albums like Sans Commentaire before his untimely death in 2007. Early Life and Career Born: Jean de Dieu Makiese on May 28, 1952, in Léopoldville (now Kinshasa), Belgian Congo. Music Beginnings: He started his musical journey in 1971 in the Kinshasa music scene, singing with various bands like Orchestre Symba and Orchestre Bambula. Bakuba Mayopi: He co-founded the band Orchestre Bakuba Mayopi in 1973. Solo Projects: He later created his own bands before joining T.P.O.K Jazz. Rise to Stardom with T.P.O.K Jazz Franco's Influence: He was dubbed "Madilu System" by Franco, the leader of the famous T.P.O.K Jazz, who helped make him a star. Hit Songs: His breakthrough hit with the band was "Mamou (Tu Vois)" in 1984, followed by other classics such as "Mario" and "La Vie des Hommes". Vocal Style: Madilu was celebrated for his expressive and distinctive voice. Solo Career and Later Life Post-Franco Era: After Franco's death in 1989, T.P.O.K Jazz collapsed, and Madilu began a solo career. Successful Albums: His 1993 album Sans Commentaire launched his solo career successfully. Final Album: He was working on his album La Bonne Humeur when he died.
