Queen Isabella Farnese is situated in the center of the composition, signaling her importance. Van Loo has imagined the palatial setting for this royal family portrait, one that we know did not exist in reality, with an opening onto gardens and being serenaded by musicians from a balcony. The sitters include the future of the Spanish monarchy, such as King Ferdinand VI and Charles III, who was at the time the King of Naples. Thus, between the beginning of Philip V's reign in 1700 and the death of Charles III in 1788, Van Loo’s painting depicts nearly 90 years of Bourbon rule on the Spanish throne. This work is both a summary and a starting point within Louis-Michel Van Loo´s artistic development, with many of his portraits produced before and after 1743, based on this masterpiece. Some of them were preparatory studies or repetitions of already completed effigies. This shows how much care and interest he invested in the project and in the making of the work, likely carried out in a slow and progressive manner, in accordance with the events that occurred at the time related to the royal patrons and their relatives.
